BNSF 5322 and a sister unit sandwiches a UP AC4400 as they snake downgrade below tunnel 1.
A UP SD70M leads three other units and a pipe train through the canyon below Caliente. I catch it again passing through rural Bealville, as it prepares to dive into tunnel 3.
Two C44-9W's, an SD75, and an SD60M(?) yank this BNSF eastbounder upgrade at Walong.
We knew this hefty lashup was working its way upgrade, but while the other guys stayed on the outside perimeter of the loop, I ran (not walked) about a mile up to the "Classic" photo spot to accommodate all ten GE units of this lashup.
As the day started coming to an end, we work our way to the upper end of tunnel 5 and catch this unique lashup gliding downhill towards Bealville, with a Coaster F59 in tow.
Shortly thereafter, an eastbound with a matched set of Premium Pumpkins sees daylight again as they crawl out of tunnel 5.
The sun is setting fast on Southern Pacific Heritage as fast as the sun sets behind this ex-Southern Pacific "SD45" at Mohave yard.
Our next area of coverage was the California Desert along old Route 66. That morning, we poke around Barstow Yard to find one of Santa Fe's Warbonnet FP45's, sitting next to an intermodal relic.
We also find Santa Fe's local architectural landmark - the famous Barstow tower. This was the last "good" shot we would take for several hours; after moving east along Route 66, the winds picked up to gusts in excess of 70 mph, making photography extremely difficult.
We made several attempts at photographing BNSF trains across the desert, but the shots were less than marginal. But the winds died down long enough to get half-decent shots of a pair of Arizona & California "SD45's" leaving Cadiz.
Frustrated with the wind, we decide to move to the Palm Springs area. But an accident induced by the blowing sand had blocked a short cut on a state route , so we backtracked to Barstow and picked up 66 again through Oro Grande, where we catch a lash-up of Geeps sitting across the "Mother Road" from a local hang-out.
A GP39-2, a GP35, and a GP30 are tied down on the front of a worktrain at the other end of Oro Grande yard.
C44-9W 4346 leads four other units and an intermodal train on a westbound race along Route 66 and again at Victorville.
We find a rather photogenic set of bridges passing over a ravine on the east side of Victorville, where we catch UP power handling autos and coal respectively.
